Massive gauge bosons from the conservation of topological winding numbers

چکیده

We consider a U(1) × SU(2) gauge theory on the four-dimensional manifold S × S. If we make the assumption that only gauge transformations connected to the identity are allowed, the winding numbers of U(1) around S and of SU(2) around S become topological conserved quantities. We derive the effective theory for non-trivial winding numbers if all distances are small compared to the radii of the spheres. In the non-abelian case the gauge bosons become massive. String Winding Modes From Charge Non-Conservation in Compact Chern-Simons Theory

In this letter we show how string winding modes can be constructed using topological membranes. We use the fact that monopole-instantons in compact topologically massive gauge theory lead to charge non-conservation inside the membrane which, in turn, enables us to construct vertex operators with different left and right momenta. The amount of charge non-conservation inside the membrane is inter...

0 Fractionalized Phase in an XY − Z 2 Gauge Model

We study a model with fractional quantum numbers using Monte Carlo techniques. The model is composed of bosons interacting though a Z 2 gauge field. We find that the system has three phases: a phase in which the bosons are confined, a fractionalized phase in which the bosons are deconfined, and a phase in which the bosons are condensed. The deconfined phase has a " topological " order due to th...

On the Masses of the Leptons, Bosons and Quarks

A previously developed lepton mass equation is extended to include the massive bosons and quarks of all three generations. The particles are modeled as closed, string-like, light front solitons whose key quantum numbers are their node number n and their winding number ω. The simplicity and form of the mass equation suggests that the dominant mass effect comes from how the particles embed themse...

We describe classical solutions to the Minkowski space equations of motion of SU(2) gauge theory coupled to a Higgs field in the spatial spherical ansatz. We show how to reduce the equations to four equations for four gauge invariant degrees of freedom which correspond to the massive gauge bosons and the Higgs particle. The solutions typically dissipate at very early and late times. To describe...
